Earthquake Insurance - Do Utahns need it?
Earthquake insurance is one of those insurance polices that most Utahns never even think about mainly because they automatically assume they are covered against earthquakes or because they haven't felt the need for it. While it's true that Utah hasn't had a major earthquake, the ones that cause major structural damage, since 1934, it's a known fact that homes along the Wasatch front sit on a major fault line.
So the question is not whether a BIG earthquake with hit Utah, it's when. We know from studies that earthquakes happen throughout the state all the time... in fact every 24 hours usually. It's estimated that 700 earthquakes occur throughout Utah each year in various regions, of which 500 or so occur in the Wasatch Front. Most of us don't even realize it because they are too small to feel.
The big concern is not the small ones, it's the big ONE that will strike the Wasatch Front. According to several seismologists, those that study earthquakes, a major earthquake could happen any time and it could be devastating for Utahns. So it's important to be prepared for such a disaster when it hits.
Earthquake Insurance Policy
Most Utahns believe that a homeowners policy is enough to cover their home in the event of an earthquake. Unfortunately, it's not. Most homeowner policy's don't include earthquake insurance. It's an additional endorsement that is added to the homeowners policy. When added, this endorsement will protect the homeowner in the event there is a major earthquake. The great news is that premiums are extremely inexpensive compared to the peace of mind and added benefits earthquake insurance provides.
So the question now is do you need earthquake insurance? We're not going to tell you if you need it or not, that's totally up to you. We sell insurance, so of course we're going to tell you that you need it. Most newer homes in Utah are built knowing that Utah is earthquake country, so they are able to withstand some major shaking. A few buildings, that we know of, have been built far beyond what code requires to withstand seismic forces again confirming to us that it's best to be prepared.
